As I read through D&C 12-13, and Joseph Smith-History, I realized the simple point, and that is this: All of the gospel is revelation; truths revealed to those who sought wisdom from God.
We can learn from the example of Joseph Smith as well as all other prophets throughout time, that God; the God of all this world and this universe, "and all things that in them are"; wants very much to share this knowledge and wisdom with each of us as we strive to become like Him.
In almost every chapter of the Doctrine and Covenants I can find the theme: "If you will ask of me you shall receive; if you will knock it shall be opened unto you." (D&C 12:3)
Ask our questions to Heavenly Father, no matter the topic. Jesus said, "all things unto me are spiritual" (see D&C 29:34). Everything in our lives is important to Him because WE are important to Him. He wants us to come to Him and seek His counsel. This personal revelation can be through simple thoughts and feelings in answer to our prayers. We can record our personal revelation. Joseph Smith wrote his revelations he received, which we now have as scriptures to read.
President Nelson has taught that personal revelation is critical to our spiritual survival in these last days. He said, "In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost." Here is President Nelson's counsel.
"The Prophet Joseph Smith set a pattern for us to follow in resolving our questions. Drawn to the promise of James that if we lack wisdom we may ask of God,8 the boy Joseph took his question directly to Heavenly Father. He sought personal revelation, and his seeking opened this last dispensation.
In like manner, what will your seeking open for you? What wisdom do you lack? What do you feel an urgent need to know or understand? Follow the example of the Prophet Joseph. Find a quiet place where you can regularly go. Humble yourself before God. Pour out your heart to your Heavenly Father. Turn to Him for answers and for comfort.
Pray in the name of Jesus Christ about your concerns, your fears, your weaknesses—yes, the very longings of your heart. And then listen! Write the thoughts that come to your mind. Record your feelings and follow through with actions that you are prompted to take. As you repeat this process day after day, month after month, year after year, you will “grow into the principle of revelation.”9
(I want to just paste the whole talk--so definitely read it! Link's at the bottom!)
As we read these chapters, take the invitation and counsel personally. Open your hearts to truly change in the ways you feel the Lord guiding you. He will guide you.
With Love and Prayers,
Jillene Smith
