Repentance is the most wonderful gift and opportunity God has given us through the atonement of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
In Doctrine & Covenants sections 18 and 19, the Lord says "repent", or "repentance" 18 times.
"For all men must repent and be baptized, and not only men, but women and children who have arrived at the years of accountability.
"And now, after that you have received this, you must keep my commandments in all things:
"And by your hands I will work a marvelous work among the children of men, unto the convincing of many of their sins, that they many come unto repentance, and that they may come unto the kingdom of my Father.
"Wherefore, the blessings which I give unto you are above all things." (D&C 18: 41-45)
Following this, Jesus gives another command which I feel shares a gentle, compassionate light on the order or repentance. In D&C 19, we read:
"Learn of me and listen to my words: walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me.
"I am Jesus Christ..."
"Pray always, and I will pour out my Spirit upon you, and great shall be your blessings yea, even more than if you should obtain treasures of earth...
"Behold, canst thou read this without rejoicing and lifting up thy heart for gladness?[!]" (verses 23, 24, 38-39).
If we can read this without rejoicing and gladness, or a solemn reverence, then I think we don't understand the significance and infinite healing capacity this gift of repentance, through Jesus Christ, holds!
Repentance = Gladness
I know a beautiful joy and deep trust i nHim. The more we learn of our Savior, and the more we strive to be as He is, the more we will feel and see His hand in our lives. We will feel His love empower us with strength and wisdom to overcome our challenges and receive all the blessings He has to offer!
I know for myself that when we repent; for big or small it doesn't matter. What matters is how deeply entrusting we are with our Savior, so He can help us release the weight of our sins and help us let go of our pains and sufferings. Then can He replace it with peace, clarity, light, and love.
He loves you and will never leave you.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
With love and prayers,
Jillene Smith
